A Taste of Heaven | R. C. Sproul

by Matt McCarnan on September 7th, 2007

A Taste of HeavenR. C. Sproul. A Taste of Heaven: Worship in the Light of Eternity. Reformation Trust, 2006. 173 pp.

Modern Christians have shown their inability to agree on where to look for God’s principles of worship. Neither pop-culture nor the status quo can provide us with satisfactory answers. We need a biblical reason for doing what we do when we worship God.

In A Taste of Heaven, Dr. R. C. Sproul searches the Scriptures, finding timeless principles from the worship practices of the Old Testament to guide worship today. God intends worship to be an unforgettable encounter between Himself and His people—a joyous experience engaging the worshiper’s entire being.

Faith Alone | R. C. Sproul

by Matt McCarnan on July 12th, 2007

Faith AloneR. C. Sproul. Faith Alone: The Evangelical Doctrine of Justification. Baker, 1999. 224 pp.

Sproul discerns a softening of the doctrine of justification and explains why Christians must return to the biblical, Reformation view. He provides biblical evidence and theological reasons why Protestantism and Roman Catholicism divided in the first place, and why that division remains an uncrossed chasm.

Preaching the Cross | Mark Dever, et al.

by Phil Gons on April 24th, 2007

Preaching the CrossMark Dever, et al. Preaching the Cross. Crossway, 2007. 176 pp.

Proclaiming the gospel is without a doubt the most important task of pastoral ministry, yet often other, seemingly more urgent activities obscure it. From time to time all pastors and preachers need to be reminded of the primacy of the gospel.

Preaching the Cross does just this. It is a call to expository, gospel-centered preaching as the center of pastoral ministry. This volume showcases an unprecedented combination of pastors representing a variety of evangelical traditions. Though they differ on some secondary points of church practice, they all enthusiastically celebrate the centrality of the cross of Christ—keeping the main thing the main thing. That message every reader can take away from this book and adopt in his pastoral ministry.
