Hidden Joy in a Dark Corner

WendyHidden Joy in a Dark Corner

Wendy Blight

Have you ever felt your life spinning out of control, and you did not know if you would survive another day?  Like all you had in this world was ripped away? Have you experienced a physical or emotional pain so deep that nothing could numb the hurt?  If you or anyone you know could answer yes to any of these questions, I invite yoCoveru to listen to my story.

On June 7, 1986, one week after my college graduation, an unknown armed assailant broke into my apartment, held me captive, stripped me bare, stole my perfect life, and walked away never to be seen again.  I lived for years cocooned in a prison of fear, despair, and hopelessness.  The depth of my pain was beyond comprehension.  I desperately searched for answers but could find none.  Though surrounded by people, I felt so alone. Finally, I fell on my knees before God.  I poured out my tears, anger, and questions to Him.

Giving Faith a Second Chance | Christopher Wolf

by Matt McCarnan on September 18th, 2007

Giving Faith a Second ChanceChristopher B. Wolf. Giving Faith a Second Chance: Restarts, Mulligans, & Do-Overs. FaithWalk, 2007. 192 pp.

An appeal to those who have felt betrayed by organized religion to give faith a second chance.

There is a perception by millions that the church doesn’t care about them and is only trying to recruit them to build its numbers. This has left many to feel forsaken by the church and, as a result, a distance from God with no compelling reason to return to the church. In this book a young pastor extends his outstretched hand to those who have left the church, acknowledging their feelings of alienation, to walk with them in their search to find a way back to God.

The Grand Weaver | Ravi Zacharias

by Matt McCarnan on September 17th, 2007

The Grand WeaverRavi Zacharias. The Grand Weaver: How God Shapes Us Through the Events of Our Lives. Zondervan, 2007. 200 pp.

With inspiring stories and thought-provoking questions, Ravi Zacharias traces the multiple threads of our lives, describing how the unseen hand of God guides our joys, our tragedies, our daily humdrum to weave a pattern of divine providence and meaning.

How differently would we live if we believed that every dimension of our lives—from the happy to the tragic to the mundane—were part of a beautiful and purposeful design in which no thread were wrongly woven? That’s what best-selling author and internationally-known apologist, Ravi Zacharias, explores in The Grand Weaver.

Too Good to Be True | Michael Horton

by Matt McCarnan on August 9th, 2007

Too Good to Be TrueMichael Horton. Too Good to Be True: Finding Hope in a World of Hype. Zondervan, 2006. 192 pp.

The good news that God’s Word proclaims is a recipe to use in times of disaster. That is to say, it comes as a relevant announcement only to those who are in trouble for one reason or another. This book calls for more realism in facing life’s challenges and a richer view of God and his purposes to match them.

In a world of hype, we may buy into the idea that through Jesus, we’ll be healthier and wealthier as well as wiser. So what happens when we become ill, or depressed, or bankrupt? Did we do something wrong? Has God abandoned us?

Divorce and Remarriage in the Church | David Instone-Brewer

by Matt McCarnan on July 31st, 2007

Divorce and Remarriage in the ChurchDavid Instone-Brewer. Divorce and Remarriage in the Church: Biblical Solutions for Pastoral Realities. IVP, 2006. 212 pp.

“Most of society thinks that the Bible has nothing sensible to say about divorce and remarriage, and even many Christians think that they can ignore the Scriptures on this particular subject. The laws of Western nations, which are based largely on biblical principles, have deliberately avoided the issue of grounds for divorce by allowing no-fault divorce. This has resulted in a huge increase in divorces, as well as a feeling that marriage can be ended for just about any reason, and this in turn has resulted in disillusionment with the whole institution of marriage.”

Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands | Paul David Tripp

by Phil Gons on May 3rd, 2007

Instruments in the Redeemer’s HandsPaul David Tripp. Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands: People in Need of Change Helping People in Need of Change. P&R, 2002. 362 pp.

Comprehensive treatment of how God uses people as tools of change in the lives of others, people who themselves are in need of change.

In many ways, the church today has more consumers than committed participants. We see church merely as an event we attend or an organization we belong to, rather than as a calling that shapes our entire life.

Tripp explains how his work follows an “all of my people, all of the time” model. If you followed the Lord for a thousand years, you would still need the ministry of the body of Christ as much as you did the day you first believed. This need will remain until our sanctification is complete in Glory.

Pastors/Church Leaders

A wonderful application of the old Gaelic saying, “God strikes straight blows with crooked sticks.” As inadequate as we are, God is eager to use us to help others change. The more you apply the biblical principles discussed in this book, the more readily you will fit into his mighty hand. — Ken Sande, author of The Peacemaker

Tripp is a careful and skillful physician of the heart. He unites a loving heart with a mind trained to the Scriptures. This book is a great companion for pastors and counselors. It will guide anyone who wants to give real help to others, the saving help that is found in Christ’s redeeming work. — Richard D. Phillips, author of Walking With God
