Believer’s Baptism | Thomas Schreiner & Shawn Wright

by Matt McCarnan on September 13th, 2007

Believer’s BaptismThomas R. Schreiner & Shawn Wright. Believer’s Baptism: Sign of the New Covenant in Christ. B&H, 2007. 364 pp.

Believer’s Baptism, edited by Schreiner and Wright, covers a multitude of theological and historical aspects all centered on the rite of Christian baptism. The goal of their presentation is to show that baptism is only for those who have professed faith in Christ and that the practice of infant- or paedo- baptism compromises the gospel itself. The book is well-researched, and the importance and preservation of this sacred Christian rite are found within this study.

Schreiner and Wright organize their presentation in 10 distinct chapters, each focusing on a different historical practice. Each chapter is written by a different author, focusing first on baptism proper and then often expanding the discussion into the mode and method. Each author concludes his section by summarizing his findings and explaining the necessity of holding to a baptismal view that is strictly for those who have professed faith in Christ.

Simple Church | Thom S. Rainer & Eric Geiger

by Matt McCarnan on September 5th, 2007

Simple ChurchThom S. Rainer & Eric Geiger. Simple Church: Returning to God’s Process for Making Disciples. B&H, 2006. 257 pp.

Simple. It’s what everybody wants these days. Just ask Google with their 20-40 word homepage, Papa John’s with their streamlined menu, or Apple with their infamous single-button I-Pod. In an increasingly overcomplicated world, simple is in high demand.

However, according to Thom S. Rainer and Eric Geiger the ’simple revolution’ has also found its way into churches. Congregations once over-inflated with myriad programmes have now become streamlined disciple-making centres. At the same time, churches which are failing to make the switch are tending towards stagnation or decline.

Believer’s BaptismThomas R. Schreiner & Shawn Wright. Believer’s Baptism: Sign of the New Covenant in Christ. B&H, 2007. 364 pp.

What is the biblical case for believer’s baptism? What biblical support do paedobaptists point to for their belief in infant baptism? What is the relationship between the old and new covenants? What did Alexander Campbell, one of the first voices of the Restoration movement, actually think about baptism?

These questions and more are answered splendidly in Believer’s Baptism: Sign of the New Covenant in Christ. A host of well-known Baptist scholars have collaborated to provide a resource for all who seek to better understand the biblical underpinnings for believer’s baptism. . . .

Not only has Gene Mims served as the vice president of the church resources division of LifeWay Christian Resources, but he also seems to be the king of re-statement. The Kingdom-Focused Church starts with a three-chapter introduction (Preface plus the first two chapters) in which he repeatedly tells the reader that he has a system that will work for the pastor who wants his church to be successful. He actually guarantees that the advice held within the pages of the book will work if it is genuinely applied.

In a day when “how to” books are being published in every area of life, it is not surprising that churches and denominations should find ways to develop their own how to books about doing and being church. Thom Rainer (president and CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources and author of Breakout Churches) and Eric Geiger (executive pastor of Christ Fellowship in Miami) present this answer to how churches can be church.
